United Nations Colombia staff and Colombian youth #TogetherForTheSDGs

  • Posted by: CinuCOL2018

On October, 24th, more than a hundred UN Colombia staff and members of the Mirador del Paraiso community gathered in Ciudad Bolivar (Bogota) to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the United Nations. Staff from UNDP, UNHCR, UNIC, UNWomen, UNDSS, RCO and UNFPA shared this special day with children of the Mission Enfance Foundation and their families.

The Foundation aims to help the youth from marginalized Colombian regions and neighborhoods to live their childhood without violence. For this purpose, Mission Enfance runs eight toy-libraries all over Colombia where families and youth learn to care for others and for themselves. Thanks to an ongoing collaboration with UNIC Bogota, including innovative SDG training, the children and youth of Mission Enfance have become actors of change in their communities across the country, spreading the word about the 2030 Agenda and acting #TogetherForTheSDGs.

UN staff and Mission Enfance families and educators met in the foundation’s main toy library in Bogota and participated in activities related to the Agenda 2030. Both UN agencies and beneficiaries of their programs displayed their sustainable projects under the watchful eyes of the eclectic group. Amongst others, ex-combatants presented coffee, sacha inchi seeds, and other delicacies, as well as T-shirts and boots that are produced as part of reintegration projects, UNHCR raised awareness about xenophobia in a neighborhood that has received a number of Venezuelan migrants, the UNIC presented a new way to upcycle plastic waste and train children on the SDGs – the Strawbees game, which will benefit the hundreds of children who attend the foundations 8 toy-libraries -, and UNFPA introduced one of their newest innovations – ECHO, an artificial intelligence device designed to listen to the voices of the communities and analyze the issues they are facing through an SDGs grid.

To end the day, the alliance between the United Nations staff and the local community was sealed by a sustainable and inclusive soccer “SDG World Cup”. Three teams, representing the Planet, People, and Peace pillars participated in the tournament. Each group embraced diversity in all its forms as children, adults, men, women, and members of the LGBTI community from a dozen different nationalities played together for the SDGs. Centered on this year’s UN Day’ theme #TogetherForTheODS, the teams united the UN staff and the community to raise awareness about sustainable development, peace, justice, and human rights. The winners of the cup were chosen not because of their performance, but according to their compliance with the SDGs and the fundamentals values of the UN, generating awareness and concrete actions for the Agenda 2030.

This year, the UN in Colombia celebrated UN day as one, #TogetherForTheSDGs!
